Research in the Aerospace Medicine and Rehabilitation Laboratory
The Aerospace Medicine and Rehabilitation Laboratory conducts internationally collaborative research with the aim of improving on musculoskeletal health on Earth and in space. The key research theme of the laboratory is the rehabilitation of postural control. Within this theme, the Laboratory has expertise in (1) spinal muscle deconditioning as a result of microgravity, low back pain and ageing, and (2) the use of technology for improving postural control. In addition to these, the laboratory also carries out research on lower limb joint structure and function in patients with injury or disease, examining the effectiveness of conservative and surgical interventions to restore joint stability. Alongside experimental studies the laboratory is home to the Aerospace Medicine Systematic Review Group that facilitates evidence based medical operations by promoting and supporting high quality synthesis of current scientific literature.
